TO 30 Electrical issue

I have a 54 TO 30 that is currently having an
electrical problem. The battery was dead after
sitting this winter so I jumped it off. Tractor started
right up and ran fine until I removed the cables.
When I removed the cables it ran for 15 or so
seconds and died. Jumped it again, removed
cables and it started to die immediately, reattached
cable and it idled back up and continued to run.
Battery cables, battery, generator, voltage regulator,
wiring, where do I start? Disclaimer: I'm a parts
swapper not a mechanic. I know what all the
components are, how to change them and generally
how they work, but diagnostics aren't my thing.
Thanks in advance.

Charge or replace the battery. Maybe jump again but bump the idle up some. Not full throttle but not to low. The generator needs a little rpm to put out.

So that tractor won't run correctly with a completely dead battery? I guess I assumed with no electronic components a battery was just for cranking and once running the generator was sufficient to supply spark. So, when it died I immediately thought, probably a generator or wiring problem.

Put a charger on the battery overnight to give it time to fully charge. A dead battery won't take charge very fast and your generator won't put out enough current to charge it and keep the engine running unless you are over half throttle and even then it might take several hours to bring the battery to full charge.

If the battery won't fully charge overnight, you might have to replace it.

Is it 12 volts or 6 volts? If it is 6 volts, and if you jumped it directly to the battery from a 12 volt battery, you may have created a problem you didn't have before.

I agree with the others, get a new battery and then also polarize the generator. Copy and paste this. polarizing a generator positive ground

Put it in your search page and the first hit is from the ferguson tractors dot org. A great and simple way to show you how to do it. Also generators need to be revved up a bit before charging starts.

Let us know how you make out.

You are right as long as the running generator is putting out power. If it had lost polarization you won't have the correct out put.
