So I found what the noise was.

A while ago I posted picture of my #7 TO30, came with a Wagner loader. This was supposed to be a running tractor when put away and it did not take much to run again. So the loader has been taken off cleaned up and painted, no is the tractors turn. But, since getting it going has had an odd noise coming from the engine. Starting at the top with the valve train I immediately noticed a lack of oil on top. Dropped down and took off the pan and was surprised at the amount of large metal pieces I found.

Apparently some work had been done below and the oil pick up tube was not attached properly with the little bolt and the whole thing looks like it went through a garbage disposal.

Lack of oil has caused worn bearings, leading to breaking off the lower cylinder sleeves on 3 and 4. So parts are on order and full engine tear down is beginning. Another spring project.

Added what the pickup tube should look like.

I've dismantled a lot of tractors and that is a first. Wow....

Hopefully you'll be having the block oven cleaned before putting it back together.

Machines shops have an hot water oven cleaner that they put engine blocks in. It works great at getting all of the loose metal filing out of the oil galleys and other passages.

If you're cleaning yours with a steam cleaner or hot water pressure washer with de-greasing fluid, it should do the same thing.

Google "Better Engineering" they are a US company that builds these washers. I've attached a video link of one that Jay Leno uses in his garage.

Sorry to hear about your luck.

When I was 16 I bought a car that used oil. Cylinder #1 kept fouling the plug.

I eventually tore it down. Found that someone had broken one of the pistons, brazed it back together, and reassembled the engine.

There was a hole in the side of the piston - Guess they didn't find all the pieces. The rings were in pieces in the oil pan.

Good thing I only paid $200 for the car.

Whoever left all that crap in the pan was a lazy butcher. They didn't even want to see what the noise was all about.
I will bet the pick up assembly is what chipped the sleeves as they all got caught in the crank swinging. Are you going to buy a whole rebuild kit?? I might have some sleeves and bearing halves you can experiment with.
