1954 TEA20 12V electrics polarity confusion Help!

My apols as a fledgling, if this thread has been sewn too many times already.
Are all the 12 Volt TEA's (with generators) meant to be wired with positive earth?
My 54 model in Australia has a Lucas generator, battery neg to earth on underside of dash, wire from neg side of new coil to distributor. The 'charge light' on the dash comes on with ignition and fades to out or almost out after running a while. Despite this it seems to run OK.

As the battery is new (hooked up same as the old one) and the coil was recently renewed by the previous owner. I'm worried that the configuration might cook something. Also, I read somewhere that the generator needs to be polarised correctly when a battery is reconnected.

PS Wife say's I'm now married to the old girl! :?

Negative earth from the factory but often converted by polarising the generator so that they are negative to earth . No real trouble there , just make sure the coil polarity has also been reversed. Look up polarising or flashing a dynamo for an explanation , it only takes a piece of wire and a few minutes to do . The ignition light is working properly , bright red when ignition is on , red when engine is running and battery is charging , not lit at all when engine is running and battery is at full charge , not lit when ignition is off .

All English made and Australian delivered TEA/D 20 tractors were Positive earth when they left the factory .

Thanks for your help. I guess if the gen wasn't the correct polarity the light would probably not go out and something might get a bit hot!

All Ferguson's were Positive Earth 35 UK production. The only major change that was made to the grey tractors electrical system was at 200,001 in 1951 when they changed to 12 volt John(UK)
