20-80 con rod locks

I am finally reassembling the engine for my 1950 TEA, a 20-80. Are the locking tabs on the connecting rod bolts really necessary or can they be limited? The ones I have are not in reusable condition. I have seen engines with lock wire, and many engines with no locks of any kind.

Thanks much.

After spending hours reading the Engineering data on theses Cap screws they were shortened, weighed and installed in my TEA 20. They are a total success. Lock wire is same as I use on the J79/LM15000 General Electric Flight Gas Turbines.

Bit of overkill for a motor that shouldn't see over 2500 rpm, but not really a problem. However, the safety wiring technique in the picture is abysmal. The wire should go [u:953b57e1e4]around[/u:953b57e1e4] the bolts, not over them. Shouldn't make any difference on a Ferguson motor, but I hope you don't wire the turbines in the same manner.

We just went through this discussion on the Triumphs email list, regarding the TR3 and TR4 engines, which sahre the same locking tabs. There are guys on there who race and are all into the details of fasteners. It is known in that crowd that neither locking tabs nor lock washers are effective, and Loctite is the recommendation. Safety wire certainly works but likely overkill on a tractor.
Now the debate becomes which Loctite? And with what do you clean the threads before it's applied?
