Rear Drive Coupling

I have another thread trying to wrap up regarding a tractor that wouldn't move. Through members help I have been led to the Rear Drive Coupling as the broken part.

Has anyone ever changed one of these? Its on a TO-35 and I am wondering if the changeout can be accomplished through the side holes or does the top cover need to come off?

If the top cover needs to come off, I have hydraulic controls mounted on top and can't seem to figure what removes them from the tractor. Any guidance is appreciated.

I think your top cover will need to come off. To remove your
hydraulic control you should find there are two bolts holding it
on. They are recessed and have Allen bolt type heads. They are
probably just full of dirt and gunk since they are recessed.

In the ARCHIVES type in ....231 Massey Ferguson Drivetrain shear pin

Read, this individual DID NOT HAVE to REMOVE LIFT COVER.

Sounds straightforward

I have removed the coupling through the side covers on a 35 so it can be done when the coupler is in good condition. If yours is broken the sliding section may not move as easily due to mangled metal. Shift the hi/lo stick into high range to get more clearance. There should be a big cotter pin going through the coupler that you need to remove first.

The Drive coupling is usuall removed by taking off the Top Cover, but you could split the Rear Axle from the back of the Gearbox, this would mean that you don't need to play around with the hydraulics. It makes the work very difficult if you try to remove it when assembled, as you are limited for room. I can send you more information if you need it.

The reason that the drive tube has sheared is that the transmission has been subjected to shock loading (snatching at a load) The tube has done its job, it would have been much worse if it hadn't sheared.. In the picture you posted, it shows the two hydraulic Levers at the top of the Quadrant, this should never happen, only one at a time or the safety valve will be discharging continually. An exception to that rule is if you are using external power(a loader or tipping trailer). If you want the information how to operate the levers correctly, email me and I will send it John(UK)
