Crank Pulley nut

I have a Ferguson TO-20 that keeps spitting out the distributor. The original seemed like the advance mechanism retaining nuts were just stripped and jammed up the distributor, causing it to pop up and jump spark timing. Tried to repair, but ended up purchasing a replacement from YT. When I installed it and set the timing, it fired right up, and then began backfiring. Seems my cam nut may be loose. The tractor in at my place in Eastern TN. I will be going back down in April to repair. My question: What size wrench do I need for the Crank pulley (hand crank) nut? I forgot to measure when I was there in February. Just don't want to have to buy something I already have.

Thanks a bunch,
LNK

Unable to answer your question:

Sounds like the Camshaft has to much linier movement?

It is almost certain, as has been said, that it is the large nut on the front end of the Camshaft. It needs to be tight.
You will need to reset the Engine Governor linkage when you rebuild the Front end. You will also need to check the small drive gear on the bottom of the Distributor, for damage John(UK) [email protected]

Thank you, I just was not sure what size wrench I would need to get the nut off the Crank Pulley. Perhaps someone could measure theirs and let me know. I travel by car when we go as we have a house in MA as well as in TN. WE are waiting to move full time to our small farm in E TN until our youngest graduates High school. WE have a TO-20 and a Deutz D7007 at our small farm now.

We also have 3 dogs so we travel by car (minivan), so are limited in how much we can bring down. That s why I was curious as to what size wrench was needed. suppose I could measure when I get down there and buy locally. The TO-20 ran great before this started. Is there anything else I should do while I am n there?

Thanks again,
LNK

Using a set of calipers, the hand crank bolt on a TO 30 is 1 5/16" from flat to flat. The parts book shows the TO 20 and TO 30 to use the same part. I believe the other gentleman have the answer for why the distributor is being spit out.

Thank you Go4Broke2. That is what I was looking for. Will update after I fix it in April.

Where at in East TN?

Update. Found cam nut loose. Tightened and didn't lose any balls. Governor in great condition, even though ball cage spun freely on cam. Now it runs like a top, for a few minutes. Ponts keep getting corroded. Clean them, runs great, then starts missing. New distributor. Maybe coil s going south. 10.52 K ohms across secondary. !2 V no resistor needed.

Yup, found the thread about part numbers for points etc http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ferg&th=102498

Picked up a BW points and condenser, and back to running reliably....
