Rubber Cup behind top link attaching bracket

I have a 1955 TO 35 and I just noticed there is a rubber cup , (similar to the ones used on the gear shifters) directly behind the top link where it attaches to the bracket on the tractor. I tried looking it up in the owners and shop manuals but could not find and references for what the cup is sealing. I've read that there is some sort of spring there. Any help would be appreciated and was wondering if there is any maintenance required. Thanks...

Steve I was going to take a photo but wife called me in for dinner and I totally forgot when I signed on.

Dieseltech I was just curious of what was there. What does the spanner nut do?[/quote]

might this be de boot in question?

Yes, there is a boot there. It's purpose is to keep rain water out of the transmission, very important! It is
no fun to change! The spanner nut behind the boot has to be removed and the spring/link assembly
disassembled.

Been a while, but as I remember I had to cut the link as it was rusted so bad it wouldn't unscrew.

You could make a wrench for that nut if necessary. It is "Y" shaped with a pin in each end off the "Y". The whole thing fits over the rod into the hydraulics and you should be able to turn it if it isn't too badly rusted.(it needs to be quite strong) There is a small hole on one side of that spring housing and inside it has a grub screw that uses an Allen key to turn it, this prevent the big nut from coming loose. You should NOT tighten this grub screw or you will damage the threads on the Nut, there is a lead pellet under the grub screw to help prevent this. I can send you a picture of the "Y" shaped wrench should you need it. The nut should be tightened so that it just REMOVES THE END FLOAT (in and out movement) too slack or too tight and it will interfere with the Draft Control. John(UK) [email protected]

Steve yes that is the boot.

John.. I don't have change it Its just that I just noticed it after owning the tractor for 9 months and was wondering what was under the boot.. After reading all of you gents posts I'm sure glad there is nothing wrong with it.

All the boot does is keep out the moisture and dust etc, which would interfere with the draft control and how sensitive it is. John(UK)
