to30 inline fuel filter

my tractor would run and then stall after 20 minutes or so,I would pull fuel line apart at the inline fuel filter area,it would take a second for fuel to start flowing again, then reconnect line, tractor starts right up,I've done this a lot over the years, everyone says fuel cap not venting.I removed inline filter run tractor without it,tractor hasn't stalled on me since.why did this happen?

Good question. I"ve used an inline filter on my TO-30 for 15 years and never had any problems. Could be you have some crud in the filter in the sediment bowl/shutoff or in the standpipes on the shut off valve assembly that, in combination with the filter restriction, is causing a problem. I have a broken baffle in my fuel tank that stirs up crud in the tank and I believe that"s the source of the crap I find in the sediment bowl.

hi Jerry,I was thinking the same thing as far as to much restriction, since I took off inline filter tractor has been good,no stalling, did the tractor come with a inline filter from factory?

To my knowledge they didn't come with inline fuel filters. But I've had one on my TO30 for quite a number of years now.

For one spell I experienced exactly what you describe. During that spell I even found that quickly flexing the short section of rubber fuel line that I used to splice in the fuel filter would start the fuel flowing again--as if there was an air lock and that would "pump" it just enough. Unfortunately, I never did feel like I truly solved the issue. I bought a new fuel filter, but I did that the same time as a other things (rebuilt carb, etc) as part of a bigger project. Haven't had the issue for quite some time now.

I have felt that the inline fuel filter is helpful (when it works). It would run fine without it, but I did periodically get stuff in the carb. I never have with one.

hi Jeremy, never tried that,I always pulled rubber line apart to get fuel flowing again, kind of dangerous fuel flowing with hot engine, now I have no inline filter, has been good ever since,I guess this could still have to do with the fuel cap not venting properly?I can't remember if I tried different fuel cap or not,but now without inline filter it has never had this problem.thanks.

Over the year of messing with tractor I have thrown so many in line filters away it is not funny. Reason they do not work well is because most are made for fuel system with fuel pumps so that means 7-100PSI and your tractor has a gravity feed fuel system so not even 1psi fuel pressure so it takes very little of a clog in that filter to stop fuel flow so you then have an engine that will not run as long or as well as it should

Old,you convinced me,no more inline filter on my tractor, that makes sense what you said.besides if Harry Ferguson didn't put it on at factory it is not needed.

When your tractor was new it should have had 3 built in filters. One in the tank which was a screen on the top of the sediment bowl assembly. The next one was in the sediment bowl and then 3rd was in the brass elbow on the carb which was another fine screen

correct they did come with three fuel filters or screens,
but over the years if you replaced the fuel cutoff valve

some of the cutoff valves do not have a screen on top of the cutoff input lines, I have even bought them that did not have a long and short input line, you run out of the long, then if you get low on fuel, you can open the valve all the way and get enough fuel to get back to the barn through the short input line, (that was the plan).

some of these cheaper cutoffs do not have the screen above the glass bowel.
all I have ever seen did have the screen in the elbow going into the carb, but most of those lines were never replaced,.

I have had better results adding an additional inline (free flow metal fuel filter). as was said in another post, it must be a (free flow type filter)

has worked well for me on my old TO35 for years, I make sure the filter is not touching any metal housing parts, so it does not wear.

it is so easy to get trash into the tank from your transfer cans, funnel etc: water in the fuel from the station.

so far so good for me,

I like the inline filters that are clear plastic. You can see if its getting gas. The problem with all the original filters is you never know which is stopped up and once you remove the bowl its a crap shoot whether it leaks or not.Mine get a ball valve and only the inline, have to walk back to the barn.
