TO-20, Finish Mower and ORC Questions...

First: Do I need to use an ORC with a five-foot finish mower on a TO-20?

Second: The tractor had an ORC on it when I got it a few years back, and I took it off so I could put on a PTO cap, while I was using a back blade.

At some point, the ORC turned a little (while it was off the tractor), and I can't turn it so I can drive out the roll pin. The holes aren't lined up, and the ORC seems to be locked up.

Will removing the snap ring do any good, and help get the ORC apart?

Third, and Final: If I raise the finish mower too high, the finish mower wheels hit the rear tractor tires.

I tried to set the stops on the quadrant, but the lift still seems little touchy: sometimes it still raises too high, sometimes not high enough. Is there a better solution?

Stop fixing things til they break.....then you won't have all those problems!!!

How's the ticker? And how's Leslie? Any snow out there? I hit 75 degrees today.[/i:e4a78e1f40]

And, by the way, Gary: I haven't screwed up the carb lately.
Started right up today - didn't touch the choke. Nice work.

I haven't used a finish mower on my TO-30, just a rough-cut mower. I'm assuming an ORC would still be advised. A finish mower might have less flywheel mass, but it would still seem like it would have some. Better safe than sorry. Probably?

I've had two ORCs apart (because the roll pin broke inside them and jammed them up). They were each a little different--parts not interchangeable--though very similar. And very simple. Pull the snap ring off, pull it apart (maybe a tad hard if the broken roll pin has it really jammed up), clean it up, put it back together. At least, that is how I remember it though it was a few years ago now. In any case, I managed to do it so it must not be too hard.

Ticker is starting to get better, but finding out there is a small asthma that is left over from the smokes. (Cold air gets to my lungs pretty quick.) Doc., is gonna start me on an inhaler, to see if that clears it up a little.??!!
Fairly warm today..(53 deg. F), but still tryin' to snow a little, off and on!

Take care buddy.

ORC isn't essential with finish mower, but best to have, as mentioned in the other post. Don't raise the lift arms all the way up. Don't need to with
finish mower. It should ride on its wheels. With most, you can adjust the wheel height. The TO-20/30 will not old a lift height. Don't expect to
raise it up and put it in a location and have it stay there. It does not have position control. You can add position control, either by home made
version from plans on FENA site, or by buying one from Zane Sherman or Red Rock (a little over $100). But position control, which is very necessary
with a bush hog, is not necessary for a finish mower. Just adjust the wheels where you want them and put the lift all the way down. As for
rehabilitating your current ORC, I wouldn't. Buy another, if you really want to use it. Yours is probably compromised. My two cents. HTH.

1) ORC is a device to separate the tractor from a spinning flywheel behind it.
Your finish mower might not be a problem, but it only takes once for a fatal
accident.
2) if you cannot forward/reverse rotate the ORC to get the pin out then you can pull
the clip and attempt to dismantle it. Mind you, it broke and the next question is
why? Is it worn out? Time for a new one?
3) limit chains might just make you happy. That is your hyd fluid is fairly clean
and new, correct? Or is bad oil the possible reason for flakey hydraulics?
4) I had a finish mower once. The wife looked at me and asked where I was going to
use it? We have small lawn area and a bit more of field action. She got ------ last
year when I ran the brush hog over her lawn. Then she came out and looked and said
it didn't look 1/2 bad but she would mow the grass the next time. I said the hog was
more fun and don't worry about it.

Thanks, all. I'll probably just replace the ORC.

Bruce: fluid is clean, and only a couple of years old, with very few hours of use. I'm using GL1, and while temps yesterday were 75 degrees, the fluid probably hadn't warmed up yet.

I have a big yard, plus a little field/pond cleanup for the finish mower this summer. (Nothing rough.)

I mow with a Woods Rm59-1 behind my TO20 and there is no inertia effect that I can tell.
I have use a 5 ft bush hog and there is plenty of inertia there.
