TEA20 year, castings odd and no serial plate.

I have read a few threads and tried to follow as much as I can but there is a few things different.

I have no serial plate.

It had a reg plate which shows it was first registered 20th May 1948.

I have an engine number S10000E and no casting number between the block and transmission housing as those shown in other pictures. I do have this (see pic) on the back of the tractor behind the dip stick however but its hard to make out.
Cannot make it out but 20/48 with the odd number being a 1 or 2?
I have loads of other piccys but this seems to be the clearest.

There is also a line of casting numbers on the engine block near the carb.

How did you see that from the picture :D

April will certainly explain the first registration with dvla in May 1948 (if dvla was even about then)

Is there a way of finding my serial number or trying to find it from the actual tractor? I need to register for a V5C and from what I can tell without an old log book or tax disc I may lose the original number which is with the tractor. I have the previous owner trying to contact the previous owner to them to see if they have the log book but it is not hopeful :-(

I have found

14R8 upside down on the engine block.

S518 on the rear axle

56016 CY 56238 behind the carb and exhaust manifold

SM on the right hand side of the transmission

2 on the hydraulic section

But is that going to help me save the reg plate I have with it?

the last digit is 8, representing 1948. The first pair represents the day, 20th. The middle number represents the month,

You may be able to find insurance papers for the tractor. Often the agents keep the files for many years. Someone may have the dealer's log book, which might reveal a sale to the original buyer. It seems that if the tractor was depreciated over time, there must have been a tax record. Perhaps thrown out after 7 years??

If this is so serious, maybe someone filched the serial number plate and put it on a different tractor. Then there will be some explaining to do.

You have a very early 80mm Bore Engine. It is unlikely that it has the part number cast into the Block, well not the one you want anyway. If there is a number it will be for the bare Block as it is cast and before being machined. Any numbers on the Block are to do with the casting of it and not part numbers
The original part number for that Block was shown as 57963 it had 6 volt equipment so the hole for the Starter was a different size to the later 12volt. The part numbers shown are from the Standard Motor Co who made the tractor and the Engines for Harry Ferguson
Any numbers on the castings will also be casting numbers not part numbers and again, they are for the bare casting before machining....John(UK) [email protected]

Hi John

Thankyou. The only other numbers on the block are 56016 CY 56238

please see pic. Would you say that was a casting number rather then a part number even if its an early model? Very similar in character length to the part number.

I have not yet cleaned the engine and tractor so I may find more info when i do that. What part number would I need?

Really annoyed that I have an original tractor with originally supplied reg plate but because a previous owner has not looked after it, its going to lose its original reg because dvla wont give me the original without the serial number. Good old England. :-(

Sorry for delay in replying, but I only just found it, always reply direct and the I won't miss it
The number 56238 is a typical Standard Motors casting number, it doesn't mean anything to you or me, it is just a reference they used internally in the factory. The Block would not always have such a number it could vary for some reason, only they would know. Think of it like this, any number that is cast into a part, is NOT the part number, it will only have a part number after the machining is completed, by then it is too late to cast the number into the part John(UK) [email protected]

Hi John

Thank you. I understand :D

I am hoping if I get the v5 from dvla that they will have the serial number for it. fingers crossed.

The V5 should have the tractor serial number ok, but its doubtful if the Engine number will be shown. There is also the problem that the engine may not be the original, at one time they often changed the engine to keep the tractor running and then repaired the old unit they have taken out and used it again in another tractor. As you say, fingers crossed...John(UK) [email protected]
