Clutch not working

I have a 1955 TO-35. Was stuck on a patch of ice on a hill. I thought I had released the brake but apparently not. I let out the clutch in low 1 and there was a loud pop. The tractor won't move. The pto works fine and so does the 3pt.

Is there some sort of sacrifice part that goes first or does the whole clutch fail at once? Any input is appreciated, thanks

Wild guess..pinion shaft. Take the cover off the transmission and check the gears there as you could have broken one there too. If the gears look good, crank the engine with the ignition switch off and see what moves in the transmission.

Center of clutch disk may have broken, an axle may have snapped, or the pinion shaft between the rear of the trans and the pinion may have broken or collapsed. You can see the pinion shaft by taking off the rear end side cover with the dipstick. If it looks intact, put the trans in gear and jack up the rear end so both wheels are off the ground. Spin one wheel and the other should spin in the opposite direction. If axles and pinion check out, then I would suspect the clutch disk.

If your tractor has ITEM # 59,Item # 59 is DESIGNED to SHEAR and prevent damage to every thing in the drive line.

I am trying to visualize this, is that past the clutch area? Could you work on it through the top or would you have to split the tractor?

Remove ITEM # 50 ( TWO COVERS) and view the internal drive TRAIN. One cover has the Trans./HYD. OIL DIP STICK and the other cover has the LEVER for engaging /disengaging the PTO.

Bob,

Your advice was a tremendous help. I did not connect the dots to realize that the machined grove was the shear point but its quite ingenious. I hurt my back the day after the tractor broke so I haven't been able to investigate the matter. My brother came today and took of the two plates off and we figured out the shear point after a bit.

So we are assuming you have to split the tractor to fix this? Could you offer advice on the next step? beyond buying manuals I guess.
thanks much,
David

I figured out through study that we can get to this through the top cover. Any pointers you can offer about this would be great.

I haven't found any info on a new cotter pin. Is it anything special? I think all I need is the rear drive coupling and a top cover gasket. Would you suggest anything else?

Thanks
David
