I 'm going to look at a TO20 my friend bought for parts . I want to get it going again , When he got it it was missing the Carb and Distributor .I see in the YT parts store it takes a M/S carb , would one from an 8N bolt up to the intake manifold ? I have a core I could rebuild . I'll try and find a used Delco dist for it . Also he said it is painted red , is that correct ? I was thinking Gray, maybe after a certain serial number ? Any special things to check , I'm an experienced mechanic , but a first timer with Ferguson ...TIA

Dalex, the bolt spacing on the Fergy carb/intake is 2 5/16"; the 8N is 2 1/4". In addition, the throttle and choke linkages are different.

And, please paint it Dark Ferguson Gray before you try to start it!

Dalex, here's how a previous owner fit an 8N carb on my TO-20. (Note the "enlarged" mounting hole.)

So they were never correct if painted red ? That would be fine , as I have plenty of red stuff already ...

TO-20's were all gray. Beautiful, monochromatic gray.

If somebody painted the hood and fenders red, and left the chassis gray, they wanted it to look like a newer Massey-Ferguson.

On the other hand, if they painted the chassis red, and left the hood and fenders gray, I guess they secretly wanted an 8N.

And, if the whole thing is painted red, I dunno - Farmall?

I'm pretty sure I have a half gallon of
monochromatic gray on my paint shelf as we speak
!! hahaha

It would be good to find out the condition of the engine before you put all the money into a carb and distributor, neither being cheap. Maybe there is a reason he had it for parts. Running good they only bring about $1500, depending on rubber and hydraulics.

Something else you could do is check compression. Even without the missing parts if it still has starter. I'm sure you know but it should be 150 lbs. Be a good starting place. People always paint tractors the wrong color. LOL

Yeah Phil , I'm going to change the oil & filter , pull the plugs and add atf to the cyls and crank it til I get oil pressure. I'll need a dist. to go much farther. Maybe a used one will pop up . Is this the model with the oil filter in the sump ??

How good is your friend with the good 30? If you can, take the 'known to be good' carb and dist off of his, put them on yours- DO NOT adjust anything, that will mess him up when you are done, but just bolt them in , and see if it runs. You will have to adjust the timing by ear, but this can save you days of twiddling around. And wasted money if it is a junk.
I never needed a whole distributor, but have one ready with points adjusted etc. I always have a rebuild adjusted to start extra carb.. it fits almost anything, so more of a tool than a part... for now, just see if you can borrow your friend's stuff. Beer helps....

One thing that was broken on that TO-20 I brought back from
the dead was the throttle linkage under the dash. Owner said
it was stuck and he pulled on it to try to free it up.
It was a pain to make and install a replacement, so just a word
of caution. If the throttle doesn't want to move, don't force it.

Well , there is no Ferguson in my future ...It was A TO30 with the external horizontal oil filter and cobbled together junk! The Front wheels and hubs are off a '39 Ford Car (including a hubcap !), in the back its got a hat rim and a 6 loop , the hood's cut , the steering box is welded and frozen , left steering arm is jammed into trans case . Carb & Starter and hood emblems are missing . If it was more complete, ie "ran when parked ", I'd do the deal . I'd have to buy too many basic parts to get it going , the wheels and hubs really kills the deal ... AND it has little resale value compared to a Ford . But the steering wheel was in great shape, not even cracked ...hahahah Thanks guys for all the info ! It's still available if someone needs it, Its in Temecula Ca., N. of San Diego....Email is open .
