F40 PS adjustment

Power Steering will turn to left easy and not to right. Then after you turn it several times it will turn left and right OK. Then it may be hard to turn to left. What is the proper way to adjust turnbuckle so it will work as it should? Just bought tractor and this is all I know about it. Thanks for any help.

Those adjustments are a little finicky. First, check where the pins go through the turnbuckle ends that go to the hydraulic valve. If those are loose, you will be chasing it all over the place. Sometime you can fix it with new pins. Next, is the tapered adjusting pin that goes from the top steering arm to the bottom casting. Its the one with the screwdriver slot and the locknut on it. All that does is allow the arm to move far enough to activate the steering cylinder valve that's hooked to the same turnbuckle. It actually doesn't steer the tractor except in emergency cases if the motor dies while you're still moving. The exact measurement escapes me now, but I think I remember .040 clearance on the tapered pin. Loosen the locknut, turn it all the way down, and then back it out until you get .040 side to side movement between the upper arm and the lower casting when the steering wheel is turned. You about have to have someone turn it for you, so you can see the movement.
Clear as mud?? Maybe someone on here more gifted can explain it better. Hope this makes sense.

I did a search after I posted this and saw that the taper pin is supposed to be backed off seven turns after bottoming out to get the correct setting.

Easiest way is to turn the tapered screw all the way in, then adjust the valve turnbuckle as needed to center it to install the pin. Now back out the screw seven turns, this should get it close to working right. IF the link ends AND pins are worn then all bets are off. This system is power assist-mechanical, the hydraulic spool turns the oil on to the cylinder for power assist. Worn parts will not move the valve as needed to work correctly. Backing out the tapered screw may help but too much will give front end shimmy trouble also.

Ya never hear of those problems on MH 50's??? You shoulda bought MH50's instead.... coulda done....
Those 40's is lemons. No good. I'll give ya a dollar for it.
