TO30 12V Electrical issues

My father and I converted our TO30 to a 12v negative ground alternator system last year and installed a VDO hour meter. The hour meter will run with key on, engine off. As soon as you start the engine, the hour meter will stop running. I took my voltmeter and tested voltage at the hour meter and the voltage is jumping around faster than you can read it. Voltage right out of the alternator is 15V, but that is the only place I can get a steady volt reading while the engine is running. Anybody have any ideas?
 
Off the ignition switch. I knew I should have drawn a schematic of the wife's TO-20
system. She is running a volt meter, amp gauge, fuel gauge, master disconnect switch,
oil pressure and water temp, idiot charging indicator lite with the hour meter. I am
considering remounting the Fergy proof meter with the cable drive off the back of the
genny that needs to be converted from 6V to 12V...
Fun never ends. You, uh, might also desire to mount a fire extinguisher to one of the
lift arms to boot. Yes, the hour meter will run with the key on. Key is on for
ignition, No? So what's the problem??
 
Sounds like a voltage regulator issue. That is often what makes volts bounce wildly. What Alternator is installed? Does it have an internal
regulator? I assume the old 6 volt VR is no longer in the system, right? Do you have an ammeter? If you put a volt meter across the battery, what
voltage do you get when running?
 
You say voltage is jumping all around. Are you using a digital VOM or and analog VOM? The digital VOM"s will dance around from RF interference caused by the ignition system. It sounds to me like you hooked the VDO meter to the start circuit and not the run circuit. Hook the VDO wire onto the primary ignition wire that runs to the coil. It will then only be on when the key is in the run position.
