Ferguson 40

Hi,

The Ferguson 40, does it have the same rear axle as the MF 65, with disc brakes, or does it have the TO/FE/MF 35 rear axle, and with the 14"x2" drum brakes ?

The F40 has the same rear axle as the MH50/MF50/TO35/MF35. The MF65 has the internal brakes and planetarys. The entire rear end from a 65 will bolt up to the transmission of a 35 or 50 but your ground speeds will be reduced.

I seem to remember the very early TO35 rear axle housings might have some differences, but I might be remembering that wrong. Would have to look in the parts book.

I am not familiar with the TO35, but the first FE35 had a weaker rear axle than the later ones. Basically you can see it in the studs where the axle trumpets bolts to the center housing. The early ones had only 7/16" studs, while the later ones had 1/2" studs.
If the trumpets and center housing was reinforced too I don't know, but I do know for sure that the hydraulic cylinder got an increased diameter so the lift capacity increased from 1500 lbs to 2500 lbs.

If the F-40 had the axles from the 35, did it retain the same brake drum size too, and was limited to 3 ton trailers ?
