Finish mower manual calls for "SAE 90 EP" in the gearbox. All I have found locally so far is 80W-90. Will that work, or do I need to keep looking?

That will work or use 85-120,it will work also.If it is low you may want to check the bottom seals to see if you have leakage.

No leaks; it's a new machine that was shipped without oil in the gearbox, according to the manual. This oil will be for the first fill-up.

The EP stands for extreme pressure so an oil specially made for gearboxes is best .
