Stuck in reverse

My 1956 TO35 is stuck in reverse. How or what is the best way to get it out. Thanks for any help.

my 1957 model TO35 has done that a few times over the years.

I take the transmission oil fill plug off,
push the clutch and place the short h/l lever in neutral

now take a long heavy screw driver stick it into the gear selector area and start by gently try to pry the shifter back in to the proper position.

when you get it fixed,

I had to learn, never to pull up on the gear shift lever when I was changing gears,
most times that is when it happen to me: I was backing up, reached down to shift to first, as I was braking to stop, my body would go back, you automatically pull up on the gear shift lever as you shift gears.

I just learned to shift slower and take my time. believe me, you have much more time to shift slow, then you have to try and get the shifter unstuck.

if you can't get the gears unstuck, then call in a mechanic, as you could do serious damage by continuing to pry on the gears.

as I understand the shifter rods etc: are worn, they can be replaced, but slow shifting will also work, when was the last time you change the transmission, hydraulic oil???

When you do what Wellmax suggests put a short piece of PVC pipe in the filler hole to protect the threads of the bung . The alloy is soft and the screwdriver can really mash them up .

I managed to slide the large gear forward ans was at least able to have a forward gear to get it back to the garage. The oil is new and in good shape. I can get the large gear to move and when it's pushed back toward the rear of the tractor all the gears seem to turn as best as I can see. But I haven't been able to get the shifter unstuck at all.

Try removing the shifter, it only takes a moment to undo the two nuts holding it down . When that's removed you can see a little better into the shift mechanism , a little oil pumped onto the rails and gate can help .
