electronic conv.

I converted my f40 w/ z134 engine and I am very happy with it.
I do need to check I thought I heard of a jump starting issue when you have electronic ignition.
Either you shouldn't or can't, not sure if I'm correct.

On one hand, a great way to go. Flip side is "Oh you sunny beach!" when the elec
fails in the middle of...
I put a new set of points in the wife's '20. Went down the road and the tractor died
on the fly. "You gotta be kidding me!" as I coasted from 15MPH to zero. I had a
suspicion it was electrical, and with a simple screw driver had the dist cap off and
the points filed.
Fired it up and away I went.
Wonder what you do when your elec mod dies in the middle of...?
Then again, you could carry a spare. I have that in my '86 Ford truck with the EEC
IV ignition and that cute little silver box that mounts on the fender. It died at
the gas station. Pulled up, turned off, got gas and no start. Popped in the second
module, it fired up and away I went.
Great benefits until it doesn't.
I figure if you buy one, buy a second one...Just keep the second one nearby and dry.

I've done several, absolutely no problems!

Most of the old distributors had problems with shaft/bushing wear, making the point setting impossible to
maintain. The electronic kits are much more forgiving.

The quality of the points/condensers today are less than acceptable.

Unless you are trying to maintain show tractor originality, electronic is the only way to go! IMHO

But, electronic is not a substitute for proper ignition maintenance. You still have to have the proper coil or coil/resistor combo, good plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Also take a peek at the centrifugal advance to be sure it's free and working.

I have one in my 1955 TO35. Just put it in this summer and so far no problems and it does start a little quicker than usual with less turns of the starter. I would take Richards and Steve advice on the matter. Easy to install, should take about 15 to 30 minutes. It comes with easy instructions with references to type of coil and ballast resistor resistance. Bought the Petronixs model here on this site.

I agree with Bruce, I always carried extra points on my motorcycle back in the day, but then again how many parts do you want to have in your car and tractor :D

I haven't heard about the jump starting issue that Willow mentions, if anyone knows please post.

I have electronic ignition in my 202 (Z134) and it gets jumped all the time.........time to put an alternator in it too!
I've had it in there at least 4 years and there's no looking back. Whenever I have a few extra dollars I'm putting one in my 35. No reason not to........and if you find you do have one go bad it's easy to switch back to points/condensor so that argument is invalid.
