ive tried to post pictures of this mess without any luck I tried starting my tractor an boom the starter blew apart removed starter an the fly wheel teeth were chewed pretty well.what would cause this?

From the picture of the damaged starter, my guess would be the snap ring that stops the drive from coming off the shaft, came off or sheared. That let the spiral spline push the armature back, damaging the end plate.

That "can" be caused by running a 6 volt starter on 12 volts, too much timing advance, bad luck of happening to hit the starter while the engine is rebounding backward off a compression stroke.

A worn flywheel gear is hard on starters. If it is damaged, it will need to be replaced. Also check the wear on the crank thrust washers. If the flywheel has moved too far forward, it might be hitting the starter gear when it is retracted.
