12V conversion

I bought the 12 volt conversion kit from this site for a TO30. Someone had already attempted a conversion and had done a bad job. My question is it already had a 12 volt coil on it ,do I still need to use the ballast resistor that came with the kit? Or is the resistor used only when reusing the 6 volt coil?

If your coil is a internal resistor you don't need the ballast resistor. Most 12 volts coils are. It should be printed on coil. I never use
a coil that doesn't have the internal resistor. This way you don't have trouble with the in line resistor. And it looks better not
having it wired inline hanging down.

If it's not an internal resistor coil you will need the ballast resistor to drop the voltage to the points to keep
them from burning out quickly,if you are using electronic ign. don't use the ballast resistor.
