TO20 steering gear adjustment

I am re-assembling to20 after painting and front wheels are 'toeing out' once drag links are connected to steering arms. Could I have unwittingly changed the steering arm angle? they are perfectly verticle when both are in center position. According to manual, they are supposed to have 15 degree incline to the rear? Mine, when parallel, point straight down, causing drag links to 'push' the front wheels out. Looking for someone who might shed some light on how to make what is called a ' major adjustment'.. more than just reduce play in column shaft. I am having difficulty understanding language and steps in manual. Have no idea how these arms go out of whack from dis-assembly. Did not do anything to steering gear assembly. Thanks

What all did you touch?

I took apart the 8 main pieces in the 2nd figure you sent, p64, I believe. That is, the front axel, supports, radius arms, and drag links. In the steering diagram, I only removed the nut and the steering wheel. Did not mess with 2 adjustment screws and did not remove the steering gear housing unit from the chassis. can those sector arms swing free if you turn the wheel too far when they are not connected to the drag links? Any thoughts? Thanks!

When you had the arms off, you rotated the arms and they moved over a notch inside the steering box.
Undo the arms and do it again in the opposite direction. Toe-in should be from zero to 1/8 inch I believe. Toe in was meant to align the wheels at road speed. I doubt that your tractor will achieve anything close to road speed.

Yes, they sure can. (I know, 'cause I did the same thing.)

It sounds like you have the Shop Manual. I agree that the procedure as described in the book is a little confusing, but it's easier than it sounds.

Bruce summarized it well in his post, but basically you'll need to loosen the locknuts on the steering arm adjusting screws, then back out the screws until the steering arms are disengaged from the gear.

Move one arm all the way to the front, and the other arm all the way to the rear, then re-engage the arms, and move them into position. (You'll be turning the steering wheel as you push on the arms. That's good.)

The steering arms should line up over the footpegs, as in the picture below. (It may take a couple of tries.) Then you can re-adjust the screws and tighten the locknuts.

Thanks guys, I will give this a try this week-end. It sounds like what is referred to in the shop manual as a 'minor adjustment'.
And Tom, that's sure a nice shiney paint job you have there on that Ferguson! I'll let you know how good my steering adjustment
skills are. Thanks again.
