Tractor started without turning switch

We have a to35 Ferguson. Today we put in a new battery. We put the positive cable on first then the negative. When we put the negative cable on the batter, the tractor started all by itself. With the key in the off position. HELP!!

I would start by replacing the ignition switch. I think it's may have stuck connection.

Starter solenoid may be stuck closed.

Was the short h/l gear shift in S start position or was it in the h or l position.

Very dangerous situation.

Please advise what you find wrong.

Maxwell99, I do not know what the short gear shift was in, I will look and let you know. After our first attempt and the tractor starting by itself and we calmed down, we hooked the battery up again, and nothing happened. The tractor would not start at all. We were told that the generator could be bad. We were also told the battery was dead, so we did replaced that first. It was very scarey. And we are not mechanics, but anyone can change a battery, right?
We did check the battery with our charger and the battery is 12.8 volts. Ok, I will take a look at that shift and let you know.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Ok,just checked the shorter gear shift, it is in the S position. We have no idea what that means. Any help will be appreciated.

S=start

the short lever has to be in the S position for the tractor to start. that is if your system is working correctly.

Chester,
Always check the gear shift sticks and be double sure they are in neutral position when starting the tractor. At least, if the motor started, the tractor would not move and run over someone.

The tractor "should" not start with the small h/ l shifter in gear, it should be in neutral to protect you from any movement of the tractor.

However as others have said, some of your safety switches are stuck in the closed position.

Good luck with it and be very careful until you find the problem.

Had a friend with a new john Deere, he came out to the shed, the tractor had started itself, he had left it in gear, when it started, it ran through the rear of the shed.

Dealer said ants got into the starter switch and arc the points starting the tractor, bypassing all safety switches, so it can happen.

S means start position,

it also means the transmission is in neutral, no matter what gear the long shifter is in, the tractor will start and not move forward or backwards until the small lever is moved to the H or L position,

this is for your safety, to insure the tractor does not start in gear and take off.

a old AC D-14 will start in gear and take off, ask me how I know that, very unsafe.

We are still trying to figure out why the tractor started without the key in the on position and the start button not pushed. First I should say, we are not mechanics in any sense of the word. The push button seems to push in like it should. One feller told us the generator was bad and it shorted the ignition to start. We removed the generator, had it checked and its fine. The man at the electric shop mentioned the to check the push button and it would be easy to remove. So back home we removed the push button and began to label the wires, there were three wires. One looks like it goes to the key, one goes to the starter on the left side and I guess the other goes on the right side, which I think is the neutral safety swich covered with a rubber boot. Well the wire to the starter looks like junk. I will post a pic of the connection to the starter. Could this be why the tractor started? Like I said we are not mechanics at all. My husband helps me, his wife, with confidence that we can fix this.
We will also have the push button checked out also. Thanks everyone, you have all help me learn.
