TO-35 Carter carb replacement

1955 TO-35 S/N 141741 (early version) with a Carter carb. I've tried adjusting it, rebuilt it using the rebuild kits you can get (don't contain much), and it's still not quite right.

What's the best carb to buy as a replacement? The M-S remakes? Zenith?

And do any have the idle speed screw located somewhere you can get to when the engine is warmed up?

Thanks,
Ted

I like the Carter. Did you set it set over night in cleaner? I loosen top bolts so cleaner can get inside
and let it set. Idle screw are the same on all carbs.

1) Can't get the idle to adjust properly. Have to keep it dialed up to around 800rpm or it starts to pop/miss.

2) Choke seems to have negligible effect. It's either effectively off, or choking it dead. (and I've verified the choke flapper actually moves freely).

A few things to note that may make a difference:
1) It's got a new wiring harness
2) 6V system, battery lives on a tender when not being used
3) Petronix electronic ignition

If I could get the Carter to work well, I'd leave it, as I much prefer to keep the 300ish bucks in my own pocket.

ither you have a vacuum leak or the low speed circuit is partially plugged up.

Check your compression. Look for differences between cylinders. Should be within 10 PSI of each cylinder.
Check the valve lash. Also check your distributor shaft for wear, point setting.

Check for vacuum leaks, and excess wear on the throttle shaft.

If the idle mix adjustment screw will change the idle quality, then the idle circuit is working.

Just be sure it really is the carb before spending money in the wrong place!
