thermostat ?

I would think so,
thermostats are more for helping engine warm up in cold weather.

just watch temp gauge, if radiator is clean and free flowing I would think it should let the coolant cool and not flow through too fast to cool down.

I never ran one without a thermostat, so do not know for sure.

Here's the theory on that one. Your stat get's the engine to temp. The engine at temp seals rings better, less blow by, less gas into the oil pan past the rings. Oil at temp steams out the water condensation. Keeping out the gas and getting rid of water condensation will keep down the sludge build up also. As for the cooling system, if water goes through the engine too fast, it does not have enough time absorb the heat to dissipate it through the radiator. A bit more research will show you that on some of the "race' engines there is a restriction installed to slow the flow of water through an engine without actually installing a stat.
A bit further looking will show that some stats come with a piddle valve installed on the flat mounting flange. This valve releases any trapped air under the stat and actually allows a small flow of coolant around the stat to allow for a smoother opening and reduces temperature flares inside the engine. You can accomplish the same feature with a small drill bit, 1/16" or so and drill a small hole on the side to allow water flow past the brass center piece. Do NOT drill the brass center piece.

Can you run your tractor without a stat without overheating it? Yes.
Is it good? No.
Will the tractor last another 50 years?
Save 10 bucks. Let's find out.
Oops. I won't be here.

(quoted from post at 13:18:39 09/06/15) Can I remove my thermostat an run the tractor without over heating till I replace it?

What tractor?

Probably best to have one. Yet, you might be surprised how many TO20s and TO30s are running without a thermostat. Mine did not have one when I bought it, and I didn't know to check until some years had passed. It didn't overheat, it just never warmed to the best operating temperature.

So my personal opinion: get one. But if you have to run without one for a bit until you can get it, fine.
