refitting rear drive shaft

had to remove rear drive shaft to facilitate hydraulic pump replacement. Now that I'm ready to put rear drive shaft back in it fits in but doesn't seem to go forward enough? The joining sleeve that has a cotter pin through it won't work in either position?(explanation)position (1)the rear drive shaft sits too far rear-ward so as to not allow the cotter pin entry. position (2)if the sleeve is fitted the other way around then because of the cotter pin location the drive shaft would then be able to "float" too far rear-ward? I'm wondering if the shaft or mating component that the "front" end of the drive shaft meets has somehow moved rearwards? I don't see how. There must be a simple answer?

Being the PTO shaft, is it possible that during the removal, something rotated? I would put a large pair of pliers
on the shaft end and rotate it slightly while installing it. If you plan on doing this again, you can fab a tool
that slips over the PTO shaft splines and has a long handle to facilitate installation. Tractor in neutral and you
could even try raising one wheel to help rotation.

[Thanks for the suggestions chaps.the drive shaft assembly sits above the PTO shaft & has a sleeve on it with a split pin through it.I think the problem is in the needle roller bearing in the end of the shaft so I have ordered a new one.I cut a small stick the length of the shaft & pushed it in to establish a known position & worked out that the shaft was not locating on the mating shaft where it was supposed to go.After I fit the new bearing (tomorrow)I shall post my success or otherwise on this site.
Thanks again.

[quote=Hello again chaps:after pressing in the new bearing which arrived yesterday The shaft fell into place nicely: the bearing I had tried before had slightly larger needles in it.The model I have is listed in my book as TO35diesil. My local spare parts man always refers to it as a C23?& his parts always fit. For any-one reading this article I would like to know what type of oil they use in the diff / transmission & for those that have a bucket on their machine plus a remote lever to control it;do you still use the same oil & do you have an external filter in the line? Let me know if I have posed too many questions & I shall open a new topic. Thank heaps, Ross Blackwell
