possible battery problem or??

Or not charging and recovering when left for a while. Put a voltmeter on the battery and see where the voltage is before and after you start it. Rev it up to put the genny on line, if no voltage increase you have a charging problem.

May have a bad coil. If key left on at one time, coil will melt insulation inside. When tractor gets cooled down, insulation solidifies again and provide just enough protection so next time it starts right up. After running a bit it melts down again and shorts out. Either that or you have fuel issues.
