HUPP Transmission

My son has a TO30 with a HUPP transmission. We didn't install it, it was in the tractor when we got it. It works fine. The problem is, when you pull out and lift up on the lever, the steering arm hits the lever. I have read installation instructions for the HUPP, and "they" say heat the steering arm and pry it out about approx. 2 inches to prevent this. My questions are (1) Has anyone done this, (2) Will a propane torch get it hot enough to bend the steering arm, (3) Any chance I would break the arm, and (4) If I get it hot enough to bend, would I ruin the steering arm seal in the steering box? Thanks in advance.

The wife's TO-20 is currently running a Hupp/Howard set up and an Everett in the wings. Before I bent anything, I would get a spare part just in case.
Now to meander out an have a gander...
The back of the Hupp handle is close enough to the trans it is actually rubbing a slight bit. The rest of the handle might be 1/4 inch away, if that.
The steering arm on the Hupp side has been bent out about an inch. Propane ain't gonna do it, nor is Mapp. So Craigslist might have an ad for a mobile welder in your area. I would have to take the steering box apart and get that arm out of there rather than transfer that heat past the seals and into a vat of grease/oil. poof.
That Hupp combo is either a low range model or the high range model. difference being the top speed is either 15 MPH or 25 MPH. The wife's current Hupp goes 15.

Any way of telling if it's the high or low range other than just driving it and see. I mean can you tell by looking? Have had it out to replace transmission seal.

I have no trouble shifting the HUPP into gear, it's just when you pull the lever out and up into underdrive, it sticks out just enough, so when you steer the tractor, the steering arm hits it and knocks it out of gear.

Yeah propane definately won't do it. You will have to have a oxygen/acetylene torch setup to get it hot enough to bend with out damaging anything. To help keep the heat from spreading just wrap some rags that have been soaking in ice water around the arm up from where you are going to bend it. I have a small cutting/welding torch outfit and it is one of the most important tools you can ever own. It ranks right up there with an air compressor in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the response. Yep, I'll for sure have to get me a cutting torch for now and for the future.

Cutting torch Is that acetylene/oxygen or propane/oxygen? You might look into that. My acy set up has 2 acy tanks and 2 ox tanks. Running out of gas is not fun, especially in the middle of a project. Have fun!

RJ,
If you can wait a few weeks I will swap my "adjusted" steering arm for your straight one. My steering box has a crack in it and I have a replacement but can't get to it until after labor day. My tractor was apparently a road mower and has three things that lead me to that conclusion: holes in the hood and fenders, probably for signage; a "breakaway" bracket under the right fender; and impacts of a Hupp, including the bent arm and a sawed-off starter switch shaft (to make room in the bell housing for a Hupp). Unfortunately someone removed the Hupp. I will tell you this - the shorter arm on one side changes the toe-in when turning and will leave marks. I suppose bending the left to match would over come that...

I will open my email.

Don

Thanks Don, that's a mighty fine offer, but I'm not sure if I want to change any thing yet. I don't ever really use the Hupp. Would just be nice if everything worked as it should, since it's there. But I'll keep your offer in mind if I decide to. Once again, thanks so much for replying.
