TO20 starter wiring

Just bought a 1950 Ferguson TO20. I know the starter is wired wrong as it has a starter solenoid added to it. Question I have since I'm not familiar with positive ground and not having a starter solenoid is how is the starter button wired to the switch on the trans and what is that switch (clutch safety? )? Starter starts turning slow but speeds up the longer I hold the button in.

Being positive ground has no bearing on the starter wiring. Once the solenoid is removed and wired back as in the drawing John Deere D sent, there is no need for any other safety switches. It is a simple heavy duty mechanically actuated switch. It's safety feature is it can only be started in neutral.

Be sure to use 00 gauge cables on the battery and starter. The 6v systems pull a lot of amps, more than automotive cables can handle. Might take a look in the starter, be sure the bushings are good, brushes and commutator are good and clean. The 6 volt systems will work, but everything has to be right.

A common problem with the 6 volt systems is very sluggish turnover, no matter how full charged the battery is! It is this that leads people to experiment in an effort to get more reliable starting.

However the simplest solution is to move the battery earth from its normal position on the rear of the dashboard to the top mounting bolt of the starter motor itself. You will need an earth cable a few inches longer than normal but most tractor spares suppliers will make you one up while-you-wait.

My own 1948 TEA20 started first-time, every-time with only half a turn off the starting handle yet seemed most reluctant to turn over on the starter motor. At a local rally I was speaking to another owner of an even older 1947 TEA 20 who seemed to be using nothing more than a 6 volt motorcycle battery, yet 1 quick push of the gear stick and it burst into life immediately.

When he showed me what he had done I got my local spares supplied to make me up a new earth lead and fitted it as described. The results are spectacular!
