'53 TEA20 Throttle Problems

Hi All. I have resurrected my TEA20 project after about a five year hiatus. Thanks to Bob in 'Oz for posting the electronic ignition information. Was able to convert from points in about 10 minutes. Works great and the engine fired up within seconds, like it never shut off. Now on to my next problem...

When hand throttle is in fully closed position, I get a nice idle. There is a little "slop" in the linkage when pulling down, about 3/4". Once I feel it starting to move the throttle, the engine basically goes to full throttle after about 5 seconds even though I have only moved the throttle handle down about 1", with 3/4 of the available travel left to go. I hope that is clear enough. I don't know where to start diagnosing this, a carb problem, a governor problem, or just a linkage adjustment problem. I have done a little searching and haven't found much. If more clarity is needed I can take a video and post it to YouTube. I have no information on setting the linkage. Just cleaned carb, main jet is 1.5 turns out. No trouble starting or idling, runs great, and also runs great at full throttle. There is just no in between, or any gradual throttle increase possible. Thank you!

Is the throttle lever loose Vector ?
If so you may be fortunate and need only to tighten the spring behind the control panel .
It does sound though like the governor is loose or broken in some way . There is a bump spring adjustment to the governor on the left hand side of the governor housing , a small screw adjusts the amount of travel . The governor adjustment is complicated and all springs must be of the right size and tension . Follow the manual carefully . Otherwise the weights may be worn very badly against the mushroom plate giving very little response between high and low .
This second situation will require you to remove the timing chain cover to gain access , time then also to replace the chain , weights and mushroom .
All difficult to describe in words , do you have a manual ?

If you don't visit this site and try downloading the TEA manual from there .

Photo taken and posted by another forum member , showing weights worn and in this case broken . Weights are soft lead alloy , mushroom plate in seen in centre . Chain shown is very loose , no adjustment is possible .

Charles in Aus. is so correct ....try to obtain a "FERGUSON SERVICE MANUAL".
SECTION F has eight pages (F1>F2) of valuable info that you should read.
I was able to purchase a SERVICE MANUL off e-bay.....sent to me from ENGLAND.
Short of you checking for loose connections and binding points a MANUAL is a must.
