Does it matter if I use the red Dex antifreeeze vs the normal green antifreeze? Dex does last longer,,,, 1955 TO35 Z134 gas engine

I do know you do not want to add the old green antifreeze to a vehicle that is designed
to use the new antifreeze. Until you wash out the cooling system.

My country boy friend just poured in the old green stuff into his Chevy pickup, the
mixture of the two types of green and orange color coolant turned to a heavy mud like
material. The truck had to be towed in and cooling system cleaned boiled out by a
radiator shop.

He is the only one I know that tried mixing the two types of coolant.

I would ask the radiator shop folks just to be sure!!!!!!!!!

That incident took place a few years ago, but I do remember it, as it almost ruined his
engine in the old truck.

as you well know, the advice you get on here is worth every penny you pay for it.

Good luck, but be very careful mixing the coolant types.

There's been a lot of controversy over the red Dex. Some swear it causes leaks, gelling, hose damage... I've run it in my Silverado since new in 01, haven't had any unusual cooling system problems. But, that's what came in it, nothing else has ever been in the system.

My concern with putting it in a system that has already had green in it is, they are not compatible. Really hard to get every bit of the old out, especially if it's trapped in sludge in the bottom of the block.

If I were looking for something with a longer life expectancy, I would go with one of the premium diesel antifreezes with the G 05 rating, like the Motorcraft Gold.

Drain, flush (remove the temp sensor, run engine fast idle with the hose in the radiator, overflowing and draining at the same time), shut off engine, let radiator and block drain completely. Then refill with 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water.

I had a new 2000 old style Chevy pickup with 350 engine, it came with the Orange color dex coolant,

The intake manifold gaskets started leaking into the engine, I had to add coolant from time to time, but never saw a leak. At 60k oil change, dealership changed the gaskets, I think it was either $600 or 900 cost to me. Was told by others that coolant was for diesel motors and never should have been in those motors with those gaskets. They installed new type gaskets that were compatible with dex coolant.

My bad, did not buy another GM product, takes a while to get over that.

And GM knew it was not right, their shops made a fortune for the dealerships changing out the gaskets, if they could get them to last long enough to get past the warranty mileage.

Still gets under my skin just thinking about how they treated us GM truck owners. It was their mistake they should have fixed it gaskets for free.

Back to the subject at hand, if you install that dex coolant, be sure your intake gaskets can withstand its effects, why would you want to take a chance with your motor?

didn't ford have a problem with AF in their V-6's about 20 years ago? my mom had a sable with a V-6 and the AF ate away the head gaskets. AF had to be changed according to specs or it got nasty with the engine. I discovered that the repair was covered under a "hidden" warranty. ford paid for everything even after mom had paid the bill with cash moola.

Dexcool is made to be used in newer closed-type coolant systems, I wouldn't recommend it for a tractor or old car. Extended life antifreeze is available in the green formula (NAPA 1 EXT for example), and that's what I'd use.

Didnt think there was that much to it, I'll stick with the green to avoid any problems considerng I dont have any problems why create them. Thanks for the help guys.

This is the most important part. Mixing the two AF's will cause them to gel and block your system, starting with the radiator.
