TO-20 oil filter change

Ok so I searched the forum and found some information on this topic but I still need some help. I am new to this so bare with me. I drained out my oil removed the inspection plate and pulled out the old oil filter and screen. I reinstalled the screen and put the new filter in WIX 51010. I thought all was well with the world until i stumbled on a schematic of the oil filter. Supposedly there is a spring above the screen? There was no spring on mine it was just one screw going through the plate, through the oil filter and into the "pole" that it screws into. So the question is do i need to get a spring? if it hasn't had one and I have been using it then can it be that vital to the operation? i don't see this for sale anywhere either. One more question this filter didn't exactly match the one I removed. It didn't have the gaskets on top and bottom. I am afraid I am going to burn somtheing up if i run this setup.

J, there's a diagram of the oil filter/screen/cover/spring from the Parts Book in this thread:

The spring is above the solid cover that the screen fits up into. You'd need to remove the oil pan to remove the solid cover, to see for sure whether you have a spring or not. (If the solid cover tries to push back down when you push up on the filter/screen, then there's a spring up there.)

The spring was missing from my TO-20, and I ordered an OEM replacement from J@ck's Small Engines. (There's probably also a "generic" spring that would work - I think there may be a thread that describes the size of the spring elsewhere on the YT Forum.)

Ok, there was resistance when I was putting everything back together. Whew, i thought i screwed up and was going to have to drain the oil.
