My rear axle seals, bearings etc. are done. New brake shoes are on. I am having some trouble with the brake rods. I have John(UK)'s information and he says the center brake shaft should be "One spline back from vertical." For the life of me I can't figure that one out. As it is one of the rods needs to be short and the other rod needs to be long to fit between the main brake shaft, when the main pedal is in the up position, and the brake stop, when the cam is against the brake rod. The fiddle brake was frozen so I had to press it to get it apart. The bushing is all but gone and now the brake stop shaft is loose. Should there be any friction at the brake stop shaft to help the brake rod move when the fiddle brake is pressed and what was John(UK) referring to?

I would suspect the first thing is to repair the bushing or obtain another rod.
"center brake shaft should be "One spline back from vertical." perhaps is in reference to the position of the key-way.
I can tell you the way to adjust those brakes once you get the shafts in place is to raise the back end up, Wrap a bungee cord around the brake pedals and hold them up. I wrapped a cord around the steering wheel to hold them in place. Tighten the brakes until the wheels stop turning. Loosen the wheel adjustments about 4 turns (if memory serves) and the brake pedals should be in the operational position, once you remove the bungee.
 
Thank you for the reply. I was thinking about along the same line and have begun the search for replacement bushings. The only thing other than the key position is that the "spline" reference refers to something on a TE tractor. John(UK)'s information covered several models. Once I get the new bushings I'll give your method a try. Thanks again.
 
Those bushings are either greased or not. If not originally greased, don't go adding a zerk to make it better. That will just attract grit plus grease equals more wear.
 
Thank you for the advice. I was studying where to drill it to install a zerk yesterday, but got side tracked. Good thing I didn't. What you say makes sense. I have a tendency to slather on the grease when in reality a small amount would be better due to the dirt accumualtion that you mention. The one side is free so I won't mess with that. I did put a little oil on it hoping it would work it's way into the bushing space. I wiped off the excess. I couldn't find the exact replacement bushing, but I think I found one that should work. It's a TO 35 clutch shaft bushing with 1" x 1 1/16" x 1/ 1/2" dimensions. It will be a little short, but should work. If not I'll piece together a section of another bushing to get the length. My fingers are crossed that it will work.
