Re: The oil filter debate

I have used a wix for years with ok results.

it was only a few years ago, while wondering around on a Ferguson tractor site.
That I was made aware, I did not have the washer and spring inside my oil filter canister on the old 1957 TO35 gas motor.

how foolish did I feel, those parts were throw away years ago as we have owned the tractor since 1960.

so the oil has just been traveling around the oil filter, not through it all those years.
but now I have the washer and spring back in the oil filter canister.
so I am good to go!!!!!!!!!
had to order them from the ARGO dealer.

Steve, my TO-20 manual says to change the oil at 150 hours, and the filter cartridge at 300 hours.

At the rate I use the tractor, it'll take me 15 years to need an oil change, and 30 years to need a filter, so I figure I can spring for Shell Rotella oil and an AGCO filter.

Now, if I used it 8 or 10 hours a day, every day, and changed the oil accordingly, THEN I'd be looking for cheap oil and filters!

Wellmax, when I bought this tractor, I used it for one winter, blading a little snow, before I changed the oil and filter.

I found that it had (a) the wrong filter, (b) no spring, and (c) the screen and cover upside down.

After I did some work on the engine, I ran a Baldwin P40 for a while, then did a "short" oil change. Now I have a WIX filter in it. All seemed to work fine, and the oil pressure is good.

So the cheapest filter is fine to use, when a lot of them happen to be hydraulic filters that have close dimensions to the TO-20 filter. Look at a Fram C153. It also lists to be a hydraulic filter, which oddly enought the Fram C153 is identical to the Baldwin P40 filter. The Fram C3P filter is an N series Ford filter, with different dimensions from the Z120 filter. The Wix 51010 is the same dimensions as the C3P and not far from the price of the Agco filter. Now combine all these facts with the known fact that the Z120 engine has a backwards oiling system in the fact that the oil travels from the inside out. Did any of the other engines have that type of system? No they didn't. Those other filters are designed for those engines. There is a reason OEM Z120 filter from Agco has gauze in it. So even if you don't use your tractor for hundreds of hours a year, the wrong filter will cause problems down the road and it isn't worth it to me.
