TO-30 Air Clearner - What is it?

This is the air cleaner on my TO-30. Anyone know what that is on the right side of it? I've looked in all my manuals - shop, parts, and operators for both TO-20 and TO-30 and can't find it anywhere.

So how does it work? The main air intake is still through the dash. The glass container was originally dry - after running the TO-30 for about 10 minutes there is oil in the bottom of it. I have tried to remove the glass container - realized it was going to take more force than I was willing to use before I found out what it was. The glass container looks like it is broken at the bottom. Any suggestions?

Just don't get mad and break anything. It is a special filter for very dusty conditions.
Just carefully clean it all out and fill it to the line with fresh engine oil. Then get a matchbox size Ford or JD tractor.. and put it in the glass jar.

Needed to replace the clamp on the manifold/exhaust pipe - easier to do if you take the hose from the air cleaner to the carb off. With that off there was nothing in the way of removing the air cleaner and taking it apart. It is definitely aftermarket - the glass container is a small Kraft Mayonaise jar with the center of the lid cut out and stuffed into the holder and the jar screwed into it. Then all put back together with the bottom and keeper. The jar is broken.

Looks like I can replace the whole jar and lid with a empty Campbell soup can, seal it up and put it back together.

Certainly would not want to loose that down home country engineering touch we like to give things here in Texas.

I now understand about not getting mad and breaking something. Took this thing off to clean it and it is really a mess inside. The top part that creates the cyclone effects is impossible to take apart without drilling out the spot welds and is just full of dried out condensed oil-soaked gunk. Soaked it for a while in gasoline to get the worst part out and put it back together. I will drill it all apart later when more time is available to do it correctly - along with the screen for the steel wool. It looks like the Kraft Mayonaise jar collected the heavy stuff from the cyclonic effects chamber. With it broken I replaced it with a Campbells Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup can.

A tin can with the label still on it is corny!
Seriously, I think some/all? of these were made to take Mason jars- or Ball, Atlas? canning jars, try what you find. These are a tough tempered glass compare to the modern mayonnaise one you just broke.
And just soak the whole thing in a tub of gas or diesel a day or two, don't go drilling rivets or spot welds, these were made to clean good enough in a long soak and drained. If you can't reach it with an ol paint brush, leave it.
So go finish a jar of grandma's pickles and find a toy that fits.
