picked up this 95 Silverado yesterday and amazingly the owners manual was in the glove box. now said manual says to use 15/40 oil for the 305. (5.0)
eng. has 118K miles.

what weight oil would you guys recommend/use?

thanks.

15/40? Sure that is not the diesel engine the book is in reference to? The oil cap should be stamped. Most engines of that vintage were running lighter oils. 15/40 diesel grade contains zinc. Zinc will eventually kill the cat. 15/40 heavy duty oil should not contain zinc. Would I run 15/40? can't say that my '88 2.8 is not running it, or the 460. The wife's van is on 10-30 and not the 5-30 on the cap.

boy am I losing it. that was in the diesel eng. section of the manual. I should have known better cause I did own a 93 Cheyenne for 12 years. 5/30 or 10/30 is recommended. thanks for setting me straight!

I ain't gettin' old. Jus cuz I found the truck keys in the freezer, (truck was over heating) Dog locked in the bathroom, (it needed to go out), I ain't gettin' old. R U ??

I had an old Chevy 2500, 350 engine, I got 95k out of it before I traded.

I always ran 10w40 with one bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer, motor ran well, never had any trouble.

Did have the intake manifold gaskets replaced at 75k miles.

There is a person that just bought a 2015 Cheyenne in our town. He had the dealer buy it in Mexico then it was transported to the dealership and he took ownership after everything was dealer prepped. As far as I am concerned it looks like a Silverado but it has chrome CHEYENNE letters in several places with a much nicer interior than a Silverado.

the 93 Cheyenne I had was chevy's low end option back then. I did not know GM still made the Cheyenne or maybe they brought the model out of retirement or maybe it is a mexico thing???

I had not heard of a Cheyenne until this one came to my neighbors place and he called me over to look at it. I would be interested in finding out more about it. Owner did say it was $5000 cheaper in Mexico but the dealer charged $5000 to get it up to their dealership in Northern Indiana. DUH Some people want what they want.

I run 15W40 FS brand in all of my Chevrolets-all of them have over 230000 miles on them with no problems other than dist caps. The 1988 Gmc has almost 450000 miles on it with the intake manifold gasket replaced at 125000 miles.
