electrical problem

My to30 was running just fine one day and the next it would not start. I checked and there was no spark so I replaced the coil, key switch, and plug wires. It still would not start so I replaced the wires to the coil and the key switch (they were stiff, cracked, patched and too small). I replaced them one at a time so that I would be sure to get things back in the same place. When I went to reconnect the negative battery cable the engine started turning over. Even when I disconected the wires from the key switch it still turned over. What is going on? How do I fix this?

Thanks

ither the starter relay is stuck or you have something wired wrong that energizing the starter relay all the time. Or....its possessed. If it's the latter.....it's not an electrical problem and you've posted in the wrong forum.

Ok, assume that I don't know much, since I don't. If the starter relay is stuck, where is it, what does it look like and how do I get it unstuck.=?

I think the TO30 didn't originally have a starter relay. It would have a mechanical switch. Possibly it's stuck, welded, or jammed in somehow.

If it's been changed it will look like this:

If it has been changed, take the small wire off, see if the cranking stops. If so, it's wired wrong.
A test light will be a very valuable diagnostic tool, simple to use, takes the guess work out of it!

I found the problem. 2 connectors on a terminal block were touching I moved one of them and it stopped and it starts now.

Thanks for the help

Dan, great you found the problem. For the next problem I have a suggestion. Get a good mult-meter, one that shows direct
current and resistance (ohms). And learn how to use it. You can get a serviceable version of these meters for less than
$20, and it will save you a ton of money next time you are inclined to start buying parts you don't need. The digital
version of these meters is easier to read and is what most people use. However there are occasions when an analog version
(with a pointer instead of a digital display) works better, like when the motor is running and the voltage regulator
causes the meter to 'bounce.' So ideally, you could get both, but get one at least. Sorry, I don't mean to be picking on
you.

The relay/switch is under the cable posts. Remove cables and then there are two bolts to take the switch out. You may have to loosen the four
bolts on the plate later to adjust a new switch. It does sound as if the switch failed in the on or depressed position. I believe you can purchase
new on this site or your local farm supply store.
