Z134 Cracked Block

I'll keep this entry short. I have a 1955 TO35. The hydraulics needed rebuilt. I parked it for a long period while I rebuilt the pump everything else. After that I pulled the dip stick to check the oil before I started it. It had oil, A LOT OF OIL! I cracked the drain plug, most of you reading this know what i found. COOLANT. I split the tractor, pulled the motor apart, A MESS. Crank shot, needs new or welded and ground. The sleeve seals were almost not visible. So on and so on. I've owned it for 25+. The block was pinned just after I got it. Cracks. I see that the block had been welded and reinforced in the area between the sleeves as well as pinned thru the block. I've tried to find a reasonable priced block. Furnace braze is not a option, cost. I,m pondering the gamble of rebuilding and using liquid glass. As you guys know, this tractor is only worth so much. I'd love to try to keep it going, but! Everything on it has been replaced with new or rebuilt. Scrap it? Part it? Take a chance, rebuild the cracked block? I would love to see a discussion on this.

It's probably a really long shot to find another tractor with a good motor and maybe real poor sheet metal and hydraulics, but if you could find one, and make one good one from two, that would be an option.

KN Block seal, cardboard in front of the rad to get the engine temp up and a non contact temp gun to verify operational temp has been achieved and maintained in accordance with the directions on the can.
Did it once with good results.
No? Swap to a V-6 engine.
No? Ok. Then make it in-line.

I have a TO35 with a Z 145 engine it seems to be a direct bolt up I don't know it's history but it works fine. Randy

There are two Ford/Ferguson salvage yards w/I 50 mi. of where I live. I wouldn't think it's a lot different where any of you live. Get out there & find a serviceable block. my .10 cents (inflation).

Thanks for the responses. I live in Central California. It seems to be Ford country out here. Another note: I took the crank to the machine shop to get a more professional opinion, they thought it was interesting that the mains were so shot, while the rod bearings and surfaces were in good shape. The pistons and Sleeves look almost new.

Do you think it is likely the leakage was due to the sleeve seals and not cracks? If the pinning worked before then it may still be working. I would have the main journals turned, put in new bearings and rings, and give it a try. If it still seeps, try the block seal. If it just won't get right, find another block and swap out the new parts. One question about condition: If the mains are worn badly, what about the cam and rockers? The connecting rods may have gotten enough splash oil while the top of the engine starved. So, the oil pump may need to be checked, too.

I am getting a massey ferguson 50 with a running z134 would take 500.00 for the complete motor. would bolt it to a pallet and deliver to a shipper of your choice

If the pistons and sleeves look good and as you say the seals were gone just grind the crank and put new bearing and new sleeve seals in it and I bet it would be good to go. If not then I would look for a different block and put all of my new parts in.

Bill, you might want to contact Lok'N Stitch in Turlock. They do amazing things with their procedure. You can also buy the pins and do it yourself. Worth looking into.
