TO-35 (can't keep it running)

I have posted about this problem child before.
TO-35 with carter UT carb.
purchased a rebuilt carb which is on tractor now

it will run for a few seconds then starts sputtering and coughing then backfires out the exhaust then shuts down.

it's making me hate this tractor. I've never had this problem before with any tractor I have owned. first machine I can't figger out what's going on.

help.

thanks.

If you have a coil on another tractor take it off and try it on this problem child. Make sure it is the same voltage.

thing is for the few seconds that it runs it sounds great. then starts sputtering, if I choke it it will keep running but crappy, then backfires and dies.

I filed the points and gapped them at 22. as per manual.

has new plug wires and plugs. took off the dist. cap and checked rotor and shaft. that all seems ok.

Had it happen on an Allis WD 45 a small piece of a leaf got pulled over the sediment bowl stem and blocked the flow of gas when the engine stopped it would float away and gas could flow again. Randy

Two ideas: Are you using ethanol? That has caused my float valve to stick shut.

Second, are you trying to draw air through a plugged-up air cleaner. I've run into
that on a couple tractors.

Ok, so you can keep it running with some choke but it doesn't run well. If I suspect a fuel issue as you describe, it will sputter, I'll give it a quick tug on the choke lever then push it back in and it will run smooth for a few more seconds. When it starts sputtering again I repeat.
You put on a rebuilt carb, are the symptoms any different at all or exactly the same. Just because it's rebuilt doesn't mean it's any better than the one you had on there.
I remember you posting about this before, I believe you checked the fuel flow from the gas tank but in case you didn't it should be a strong steady flow, not just a trickle. For me, on both my tractors the most common source of fuel issues has been sediment from the tank entering the fuel line and eventually plugging off the flow to a trickle.

I know the feeling of starting to hate a particular machine. With these ones it's worth working through. I did the same sort of thing with my TO35 and I've really come to like it! I think with mine it was a combination of fuel flow, a very badly gummed up carb, ignition points/condenser, and low/no charge on the battery.

in the process of draining the fuel tank I noticed that the fuel line touches the exhaust pipe where the pipe connects to the exhaust manifold. on my other 35's there is a bend in the fuel line that takes the line closer to the engine block. the engine will sometimes run long enough to get the manifold hot and I am wondering if the fuel line touching the exhaust pipe may have something to do with problem of not being able to keep it running???

drained the fuel tank and took the fuel line and sediment bowl off. buncha crud was above the filter. bowl assembly is none like I have seen on a Ferguson before.

If the coil don't help try changing the condenser. I went through 3 new condensers and then found a used on that worked. New stuff today you are lucky to get one that works.
