TO 20 popping out of gear

My '49 TO 20 started popping out of gear this weekend. Only seems to be first gear but don't spend a great deal of time in others gears to know that for sure.

Have not taken off the gear shift cover. Not sure what to expect. Can anyone tell me what to look for?

Worn detents not staying in would be a good place to start. Stuck springs, You get to open it and play
exploratory surgery.

The detent for the 1st & 2nd gears was stuck in the up position. Someone used silicon gasket maker on the shifter cover and got a little carried away. The remnants finally worked their way down and jammed up the detent.

So now it's fixed with less RTV. Life is good.
