to-35 dancing dist cap

Well......the only thing that turns inside of it is the rotor, which is attached to a shaft. Is the shaft bent? Even just a little bit? Is the rotor ever so slightly too long?

Without being a mechanic I believe I would go buy a new distributor cap. I don't have any idea if they can wear down that much or not but sounds good to me.

Both plastic pieces are rattling, not the unit itself, and if I didn't know better... I'd say neither the cap or rain cover is either 'right' for the distributor at all, or the rims are just worn to a frazzle, they just can't tighten down anymore. Time to invest a ten dollar bill...

Steve if you have another tractor that is the same just change distributor caps and if it does the same thing then I would say you need a new distributor. If it works just fine then you need a new cap.

What happens when you try to stabilize it with your hand? Can you stop the movement? Can you feel the rotor hitting?

If the rotor is hitting, something is wrong. Wrong rotor, as in the brass piece is too long or the rotor is sloppy on the shaft. I don't see the shaft being bent bad enough to cause that and still run, but it's possible. Take the cap and rotor off, crank on it, watch the shaft turn, look for runout.

If holding the cap stops the movement, I would suspect there is a problem with the fit between the cap and the dust cover, wear, something broken, something under the cap holding it up, etc.
