TEF20 apart

Still haven't driven the tef20. When i
acquired it in November it had
'transmission issues' probably the throw
out bearing i was told.

Well fast forward several months, tractor tried
to light itself on fire, the wiring harness
shorted out when i went to move it into the
shop. That was January.

So now,I'm in the rear end (See picture )
got the rear end sorted out, it was stuck
in 1 and 3 at the same time. Took a 4 foot
pry bar and rocking the tractor to pop it
into neutral. All the gears look good no
noise from the bearings.
Should i do anything while in here? Seals
are not allowing oil to get into the clutch
so that is good.
Also, the steering box is loose, has slop
in it about 1/2 inch. Should i be opening
this up and replacing bearings? Are they a
standard size?

There should be detent plungers and springs in the 3 holes over the shift rails, are they there? Also the area where the shifter lever goes into the selector notch is somewhat worn, but probably still serviceable, but what does the end of the shifter look like? If it's worn, it can be welded up and ground back into shape.

While the steering gear is off, might as well take a look inside. You can probably find the bushings, but don't take yours out until you do! The original leather seals are obsolete but rubber seals can be found.

Slop in the steering box is easily remedied . Lift the load off the front wheels so that the steering moves freely . On each side of the steering box just above each steering arm and slightly to the rear there are large lock nuts with a slotted bolt within , seen here . Loosen the lock nut a little and very carefully screw in the slotted bolt . Do this for both sides then when happy with the free play tighten up the lock nuts and check the steering once the wheels are back on the ground . Don't over tighten the bolts , you want a little free play . While you are at it consider replacing the oil .

Thanks for the help Gentlemen!
Good to know adjusting the steering box is so easy, I will adjust the steering box once installed back on the tractor, and change the oil in it.

The springs and detent balls are missing so they will be replaced, the shifter has no wear on it at all, i will post a picture of that once i get home from the city.
