I put 15 w 40 in transmission and I had a bad leak, put new seals in transmission shaft, still leaking ,not very bad but it hasnt been started yet. is oil too thin or what? this is in a 40 fergy

Assuming it leaked out the front seal, one thing you have to be careful of is filling it too fast. The passages between the transmission housing and the rest of the rear case are small, takes a while for the oil to seek the proper level.

What's still dripping is probably what's in the bell housing. Be sure the drain hole is clear. If the level is correct (to the bottom of the round inspection covers) it should be OK. I would give it a try, see what happens.

What Steve said about filling too fast and also if the shaft is ruff then smoothing it with emory cloth. That's what I didn't know to do.

Yes, over full will cause it to leak. Better with these to under fill than over fill. That way if you're on a downhill slope it's less likely to leak on ya.

I changed the oil in my TO35 transmission two years ago.
Took about 6 hrs to let the oil drain after having tractor working for awhile.

I added back about 3 gallons of 90 weight GL-1 mineral oil. Let it set awhile, checked the level a couple of times, then slowly added the remained of the oil.

I keep the oil level at the mid range or slightly lower because my tractor will leak oil out the front shaft if you overkill.

DO not get oil on that clutch. Keep drain hole open.
