Grease for steering box to stop leak

Hi All.

Reading on here that people use corn head grease for steering boxes.

I just bought castrol heavy duty grease for greasing the tractor.

Can i throw this in the steering? I dont really know my greases.

And how much grease to put in.

Thanks

I think corn head grease would flow a bit better than reg grease.

I have heard the top bearing coming down from the steering wheel shaft will not get lubed unless the gearbox is full. if the seals are completely gone, corn head grease may still leak out.

I always check the oil level in my steering gear box each time I have the battery out for service. so far so good.

The corn head grease is a simi-fluid grease, sort of like warm Jello. It's thick enough to not run out bad seals like gear oil, but thin enough to refill gaps and voids as the mechanical parts move. The heavy duty grease is a little too thick, it tends to migrate away from gears and such as they move.

I would replace the fill plug in the steering gear with a bushing and grease zerk, pump the corn head grease in slowly as to not blow the seals, and fill it completely full until it comes out the top seal.

The heavy duty grease is what you would use for everything else with grease fittings, and you can even use it for front wheel bearings.

Any old grease mixed with engine oil to lower the viscosity will do . Don't go over board with the oil , warm the lot up and usually it will just about pour in through the hole . Otherwise put the grease into a heavy snap lock bag , snip off one corner and pipe it into the filler as you would cake icing . Make sure there is no water in the steering box first and apply lots of grease to the top bearing . New seals are easy to fit if you are prepared to grind off the lugs on the steering arms . This lets you slide new ones on without dismantling the gearbox . Ruins the tractor's authenticity , so this is a decision you must make yourself .

The trouble with regular grease is it will get stiff especially in the Winter and not really stay on the gears and bearings too well in a gearbox, for what little a tube of
JD Cornhead great costs its a whole lot better to use it.

Have you considered changing the seals? Might not be too bad a job, depending on which model you're dealing with.
I have changed them on my TEA, and did remove the steering box at the time - not hard, but takes some time.
I am right now fixing a leak (that it seems I caused...) on my TO35 - as well as seals, there are O-rings that can leak. Also not a hard job.

Corn head grease is NGLI 00 rated. Drop into zip lock bag. Add 90W. Mix until gooshey.
Cut corner off bag bottom. Squeeze into opening.

according to winkipedia 00 grease is like consistance of apple sauce
