TO20 red light stays on

Replaced wiring harness with new one from Agri Services. 6 volt positive ground, new voltage regulator. Red generator light stays on. Checked and rechecked wiring and I am sure it is installed correctly. Getting 6 to 9 volts across the battery terminals. Voltage sometimes increases with engine rpm, but is erratic and not steady. Sometimes 6 volts with high rpm, sometimes 9 volts. Any suggestions how to find why the red light stays on? Polarized generator before starting..

Where did you get the regulator from?

This is a British made one isn't it? TE or TEA?
Isn't the red light suppose to stay on? Or atleast when charging? I never hooked mine up.
One of our poms or strines on here will know once they read this post.....

One side of light to ARMature post on generator or regulator, other side to switched side of ignition switch.

Are you using a digital meter to check voltages. Many of them are prone to be erratic when working on old tractor systems

If wired correctly and you are truly getting up to 9 volts at the battery the light should go out.

I was asking where the voltage regulator came from because the cheaper voltage regulators are quite known to be hit and miss when it comes to working and charging reliably. There is a thread on here where I posted a pic of the inside of one of the cheaper regulators beside of a well made Borg Warner regulator. There is quite a bit if difference between the two. If it were me and I use the tractor quite a bit, I would go to an oreillys and get a Borg Warner R195 regulator and install it. Granted they cost around $65.00 but they are guaranteed for life. It's what I have on my two TO-20's. One of them sits in the weather and has been going strong for years now...

Regulator came from yesterday's tractor. Voltage measured with volt meter. Will try old regulator. Thanks
