1.is this rotella the correct stuff?

2. since ferguson specifically stated to use NON-detergent oil in the early fergusons is it safe to assume detergent oil was available back in the 40's, 50's and 60's?

3. oil has come a long way in past 50 years or so so is it safe to assume oil filters have improved as well?

4. have oil filters manufactured today for these old machines come as far as improvements to modern oils? what I am getting at is if oil filters made today for these old machines have NOT been improved should we really use detergent multi vis oil in these old engines. the way I understand multi vis oils is that as the engine warms up, thereby warming up the oil, the additives added to multi vis oils makes the oil go from 15w to 40w. once the oil gets to 40w will it pass through the oil filter as a 20 or 30w oil would thereby leaving the contaminates behind in the oil filter.

thanks!

steve.
my understanding of detergent oil verse non detergent oil is as follows.
detergent oil keeps the dirt particles suspended in the oil, as the oil flows through the oil filter the dirt will be filtered out.

non detergent oil lets the dirt particles fall to the bottom of the oil pan and you clean the dirt out when you drain and change the oil.

example: using GL-1 oil in the transmission/hydraulic system of these old tractors, no oil filter, therefore, you have to get them good and hot working the tractor, then let the oil drain out of the sump for a few hrs to get the dirt out of the trans/hyd system.

that is just my understanding:

maybe multi grade oil was not available back in the day,
my book said to use 20 weight in the winter
30 weight in the summer

steve -
Yup, that's the stuff a lot of us in the more northern climates use year-round. I use it in both the motor and the tranny on my '55 TO-35 with very good results.

Engine oil has greatly improved since the 1970's and even that was a little better than what was available when those tractors were new. Filters...well some are still very good and some have actually gotten worse. A Wix filter is a fine filter for the Z129 and Z134 engines...for the Z120 engines get them from Agco only. Because of the backwards oiling system of the Z120 not all filters work as well. The Agco filter is the only one made with a solid metal canister with gauze filtering media.

I use the highest Detergent oil when ever possible, the non detergent oil deal is a very bad Myth... Ive used Mobil 1 15W-50 syn. (summer only) motor oil in my 1959 TO-35 since buying it used in 1989, i cant tell you how good it runs,it has had zero engine problems. engine never has been apart since tractor was built.

I agree,I use shell rotella 15w40 in my tractor, it great oil.

However, I did screw up two years ago when I changed the hydraulic transmission fluid, I should have used 10w40 oil in that sump.

But I read too much information and ordered GL-1 90 weight mineral oil from NAPA. As the manual calls for, but I understand that is old school thinking.

Now in the warmer months everything is fine, but in the winter, you have to wait a few minutes for the old worn hydraulic pump to get up to speed. Lift will just set there for about 3to4 minutes before it starts working, then it's ok.
