While brush hogging muffler separated from header pipe. (The exhaust system mounts under the engine) I removed the exhaust and continued hoggin with just the header pipe attached. What I noticed was that the water temperature lowered to a steady 170 degrees which usually stays at about 190 to 200. The following day I reattached the exhaust and the temp went back to 190-200 while brushing. Had no problems , no overheating etc. Is it possible without the back pressure from muffler engine ran cooler and if so is that a sign of "time for a new muffler"

I wouldn't think it would make any difference. Was the grass heavy or the same both days? You may have got hotter from exhaust come back on you. LOL

It's possible the muffler is clogged or collapsed internally. Look in it with a flashlight, tip it end to
end, listen for anything loose. A good test would be to crank the tractor, set the throttle to full speed,
then test fit the muffler. See if it offers resistance to the flow.

I did hear some metal moving in the muffler when I picked it up.. not very much though. I'll check the flow as you said.

Thanks
