Just went to Napa and picked up Shell Rotella 10w30 for the oil change. He did have a straight 30 weight non-detergent oil.
But I went with the Rotella because of the recommendations here. Does anyone perfer the non detergent oil. Also I heard there is a zinc additive the is out there.. it is worth using.

my old fergy likes shell rotella 15w40, runs good and holds good oil pressure with that weight oil.
I also use the same oil in my dodge diesel truck, no problems.

keep your eye pealed, Walmart has it on special from time to time.
buy up when its on special.

Advance Auto sells the 15W40 Rotella for about $17 / gallon, but they put it on sale often for $13 or 13.95, i forget which.
Also, sometimes you can get an online coupon from Advance and buy it cheaper that way and pick it up at the store and not pay
any shipping. In fact many many items are cheaper that way if you have an Advance nearby. The only caveat is that items
already on sale do not qualify for the online sale coupons.

The Rotella is a good oil to use. Afraid the 10w30 will be a little light, probably won't have much hot idle oil pressure. The 15w40 is closer to the 30 weight that was in it.

As far as non detergent, I've never used it in an engine, never will. I've heard stories of using detergent oil in an old engine that always had non detergent, and it released deposits. Never actually witnessed that happening, who's to say it didn't die of old age anyway...

I used to use non detergent in reciprocating compressors. It didn't make carbon deposits on the valves like detergent oil would, so it's said. I now use synthetic, works much better!

Thanks guys. I will exhange the 10w30 for 15w40. Will save a few bucks too. He has the 15w40 in gallons, Quarts were $5.95 apiece.

So which Rotella product do you use? I see Rotella T1 - Straight Grade, Rotella T - Triple Protection, Rotella T5 - Synthetic Blend, and T6 - Full Synthetic. Aren't these all for diesel engines? Last time I looked, my TO30 still had spark plugs.

The T Tripple is what you want, the T1 is straight weight, like 10, 20 or 30 weight.

The T Tripple is multi grade, like 15w40.

The others are synthetic. It is good oil, but overkill/over price for your needs IMHO.

The reason for going with the diesel oil is it still has some zinc additive, which the older engines with flat tappet cams need. The newer engines have gone to roller cams, the automotive oil doesn't have zinc, thanks to the EPA.

I would not want to put any Synthetic oil in an old tractor.
the Synthetic oil has a good cleaning package and would strip off all the old sludge inside the motor, stopping up oil passages.

just my two cents.

I use 10w30 in my 54 TO30 and have great oil pressure (35). I just buy a good brand. Engine was rebuilt in 1994. Has about 600 hrs on the rebuild. Doesn't use any oil either.
