TO30 Steering wheel replacement

Bought a brand new steering wheel from this site to replace my old sun cracked and taped one and looking for any tips prior to doing the job this weekend. From the diagram it looks like a woodruff type key on a tapered shaft held in place with the acorn nut. I'm guessing that applying a heavy dose of penetrating oil, loosen the nut and having someone give the nut a good whack with a hammer while I pull up on the wheel will do the trick. But then I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time). BTW I did buy a new acorn nut as well so I can beat the heck out of the old one.
 
Some are hard to remove. If you have a puller used it and not beat on shaft(nut).I would hit up on bottom of center of steering wheel while someone pulls up at same time if you don't use puller.

I bought a 4" x 1-7/8" x 3/16" thick washer and cut the side out, as shown in the picture here. It has come in handy on a few different vehicles including my TO35. Slip it around the steering column and under the steering wheel, and put the arms of a puller on it, with the screw on the steering column. Pop! Off she comes.
 
I use my knees under the steer wheel and push up as I tap the loose Acorn nut.
You don't want to brinnel the bearings by pounding with out lifting up the wheel to lessen the shock load on bearings.
 
Easiest way to get old steering wheels off is to loosen the nut and then start it back on about 1/4 of the way.Then get an air chisel with a rounded nose bit on it and hammer the center of the steering shaft while you hold up on the wheel.Most of the time they pop off in a couple seconds.
 
Thanks for all of the suggestions! I do have a puller and an air chisel, so now I have a bunch of options which are better than just cursing up a blue streak. I'll stop by NAPA on my way home today and get that mongo washer to use with the puller if that's the route I go. It's supposed to rain all weekend here in Colorado, so might have to wait a bit, but will update the board with what ends up working.
 
Thanks all for the suggestions. Turns out the steering wheel removal was a non-event. Soaked it with SeaFoam penetrator for two days, removed the nut, got my knees under it like Duner suggested and a small tap on the shaft with a hammer popped it right off. Hopefully the other suggestions will be helpful to those with more stubborn situations.
