Slow turning over

I bought a TO 20 Ferguson a short time ago, done an amount of repairs on itmostly minor stuff,it runs pretty good when I get it started, the problem is its slow turning over, good 6volt battery, but just turns over so slow, sometimes not at all, keep trying to start and eventually it starts, can it be that my battery cables are too light, could this be my problem? <I checked all the connections and wire brushed all the ends good, what am I missing.

you need thickest batt. cables you can buy. at least as thick as your thumb. if that does not fix the problem clean all elec. connections between batt. and distributor. if that does not work you need more help than I can provide. hth.

Fat cables. Good clean connections. That's the best place to start. If that doesn't work another thing to check is whether the starter post has become poorly connected inside the starter. I recently had my starter apart to resolder the internal connection to the post. It made a world of difference.

What happens if you jump from the battery to the starter. That would bypass the switch and wires and might provide insight. (Of course you'd need good fat jumper cables.) But be sure it's in neutral if you do that.

After cranking for a few seconds, feel the cables and connections. If anything is warm or hot, there is high resistance at that component.

The bigger the better on the cables, 00 gauge is recommended. If the battery is still grounded to the back of the dash, try moving it directly to the engine block.

Sounds like maybe I need to look for heavier cables, will do that tomorrow, thanks everyone for all the great advise

My Dad had used a 4ga cable for the neg side. Would not turn over fast enough to start. I put in an 0ga and it solved that problem.
