when holding spark plug wire at spark plug I can feel a jolt but do not see a spark. are points messed up or are my eyes worse than I thought???
thanks!!!

if you are holding the wire as it is cranking... focusing in on a small blue spark is the least of your problems.
We'll say??? Really good sparks are bright and very visible to decent eyes... but you can still feel the not so good ones... I would say if you feel like you almost died? ... the points are good.

was not much of a jolt. not enough to make me drop the wire. maybe I should look for spark after dark ??????

Nah, you should be able to see a spark even during the day.......in the shade for sure but you should see it if it's good.
I had the same thing with the 5hp B&S engine on my tiller. Put in new points and condenser and now I can SEE the spark.......didn't even try to feel for it, I'm sure it's much stronger now. Oh, and it actually runs now.

If you are feeling the jolt, remember your body is draining away some of the voltage... Unless you were contacting the terminal end, or there was excess moisture on the wire or you hand, sounds like it could be time for some new wires. Even if they are non resistor wires, the insulation could be leaking.

Another test would be to remove a plug wire, hold a grounded wire near the distributor terminal, crank the engine through and watch the spark. Check each terminal, one at a time so the wires don't get mixed. That will be a good test of the coil, cap, and rotor. Get a good spark at the cap but not at the plug end of the wire = bad wires.
